I'm interested in starting coaching!

I wasn’t trying to be profound.
It was the summer of 2016, and I was teaching a workshop for direct sales leaders – just doing what I’d done a dozen times before.
Somewhere mid-session, I tossed out a line like it was no big deal:
“If you want to be successful in this business, it’s simple.
You have to Be Freaking Awesome.”
The room lit up.
People sat up straighter. Smiles spread.
And then one woman wrote across her notes in huge letters:
“Be Freaking Awesome – by Angela Belford.”
And that was it.
The moment everything clicked.
I had been dragging my feet on a manuscript I started back in 2014.
I’d put it down for nearly two years – felt stuck, uninspired, unmotivated.
Even though I felt compelled to finish it… I couldn’t.
It just didn’t feel like the book.
But in that moment, I realized – I wasn’t unmotivated.
I was misaligned.
That line wasn’t just a good tagline. It was the message I’d been living.
Be Freaking Awesome wasn’t a throwaway phrase.
It was my life story – summed up in three words.
I scrapped the old draft.
Started fresh.
And finished the new manuscript in four months.
Over the next year, the talk spread fast—
I delivered it on stages, at conferences, in keynotes. People loved it.
They laughed. They cried. They told me it changed them.
But after the book launched, something in me cracked open.
The panic attacks returned—stronger than they’d been in 20 years.
Turns out, sharing your story publicly is one thing.
Owning it is another.
The more I told it, the more exposed I felt.
So I stepped back.
I shifted my energy into advocacy work – something that felt safe, impactful, and less vulnerable.
One of the last times I was invited to give the talk, I had an opportunity to join a cohort in D.C. creating a strategic plan to end homelessness for our local community. If I missed it, our team would have to wait another year.
So I asked my daughter Sami to give the workshop session.
She used my slides – but told her own stories.
She didn’t need to rehearse the message.
She’d lived it.
And it landed.
That spring of 2018, I realized this message wasn’t just mine.
But I wasn’t ready to carry it again.
So I set Be Freaking Awesome down for almost three more years.
From the outside, everything looked incredible. The advocacy efforts were working.
But on the inside, I was unraveling.
The panic attacks subsided.
Then came the explosive anger when things didn’t go my way.
Not good for advocacy work and team building.
What I thought was burnout… was actually a reckoning.
Because here’s what I now understand:
You can build success while still believing you’re not enough.
You can get applause while still questioning your value.
You can lead teams, win awards, and hit your goals –
all while secretly hoping the next achievement will finally make you feel whole.
That’s what I had done for decades.
I had built a high-achieving life trying to outrun the old belief:
“I’m not enough.”
These beliefs don’t block success.
They fuel it.
But they also hollow you out.
And eventually, they cost too much.
So I did what high-functioning achievers do:
I channeled the energy into productivity.
Purpose-driven work became my escape hatch – it let me talk about my story without actually dealing with it.
I could share it without feeling it.
But the truth is – no matter how far you run, your beliefs follow you.
For years, I thought I was chasing peace.
But I wasn’t.
I was chasing freedom from the crap in my head.
You know that constant mental chatter? The guilt, the pressure, the never-enough loop?
Yeah – that.
That question – How do I get free from the crap in my head? – was running in the background of everything I achieved.
And eventually, it became the foundation of my second book, Traveling Light.
Because it turns out, the real win isn’t just success.
It’s learning how to carry it without the weight of your inner chaos.
I didn’t write it from a place of mastery – I wrote it from the middle of the mess.
But naming the beliefs I was carrying allowed me to begin setting them down.
At first, it was about releasing the fear and pain that had been living in my body for years—despite all the therapy, mindset work, and positive affirmations.
Because as I eventually learned, your body remembers what your brain tries to bury.
But over time, a new question emerged:
“How do I want to feel?”
Not just what I want to accomplish – but how I want to be while I accomplish it.
That shift didn’t erase my drive.
It refined it.
Now, I know that being driven by love, compassion, and how I want to feel is more powerful – and more sustainable – than being driven by fear.
And when we launched the Be Freaking Awesome podcast, something reignited.
Not just the brand. Not just the talk.
But the belief behind it all:
That you don’t need to perform to be powerful.
You don’t need to posture to be persuasive.
You just need to lead from wholeness.
What started as a book became a breakdown.
That breakdown became a breakthrough—
and that breakthrough became a body of work.
Because once we walked through the fire, we knew we had something worth sharing.
We weren’t just surviving anymore – we were building a repeatable process.
And we started to wonder:
Could this help other high-achievers lead from wholeness too?
We didn’t set out to create a coaching method.
At first, it was just survival – figuring out how to quiet the inner chaos and live with more peace.
But over time, we started seeing patterns.
In coaching conversations.
In team dynamics.
In high-achievers who looked successful on the outside – but were still battling the “I’m not enough” soundtrack inside.
We realized it wasn’t just our story.
It was theirs, too.
So we started reverse-engineering what had worked for us:
We tested it in workshops.
In executive coaching.
In real conversations with real leaders, navigating real pressure.
And it worked.
What started as a healing journey became a framework.
What helped us survive is now helping others lead.
At Be Freaking Awesome, we don’t just teach skills.
We shift beliefs.
We change trajectories.
My coaching begins where most don’t: with the nervous system.
Because when you’re stuck in “I’m not enough,” your brain is in survival mode – not strategic mode.
I blend deep emotional intelligence with decades of business experience, moving fluidly between coaching and consulting. I help leaders:
As a consultant, I fix the strategy.
As a coach, I fix the sabotage.
Most people think fear of public speaking is a skill issue.
It’s not. It’s a nervous system issue.
I’ve been training communicators for over 30 years – from sales leaders to TEDx speakers. My approach is grounded in the same belief framework:
Before you learn how to stand, gesture, or pause –
You need to shift the belief that says, “I don’t belong on the stage.”
When that changes?
Your whole presence changes.
Communication is the #1 problem in most organizations – but it’s rarely the real problem.
Sami Kinnison uses a diagnostics-first approach to uncover whether the root issue is trust, capacity, role clarity, or something else.
“A communication issue is like a runny nose – it might be allergies, a cold, or the flu.
One-size-fits-all training is just tossing antibiotics at it.”
You don’t need another one-off training that checks a box and changes nothing.
Sami’s approach is different.
She works with teams over time – giving them space to reflect, practice, and actually build the muscle of better communication.
It’s not about dumping content. It’s about shifting patterns.
Because transformation doesn’t happen in a day. It happens over time, with the right guide.
If you’re tired of surface-level solutions and want real transformation—
Let’s talk.
We work with:
✅ Executives and founders seeking clarity and calm
✅ Teams ready to ditch communication drama
✅ Professionals preparing for a sales presentation, TEDx talk, or high-stakes moment
Because when you believe you’re enough, you stop performing.
You start showing up.
That’s what it really means to Be Freaking Awesome.
